about us
Archrival was founded as a non-profit organisation in 2011 by architects Claire McCaughan and Lucy Humphrey. Our vision is to challenge practices in architecture and design by facilitating unsolicited and innovative projects. This is achieved by uniting individual creative professionals on a project-by-project basis, who are often commercial rivals, allowing the development of experimental work outside of their daily practices. Archrival operates with an agenda to expand the practice of creative professionals, by operating without clients and creating dynamic work environments focused on collaboration and experimentation.
context
Archrival reacts against the conventional paradigms of architectural practice; the slow process of making buildings and outdated procurement methods. By working at a small scale Archrival procures projects quickly, creating momentum and catalyzing change within the industry. Archrival asserts that architectural practice should be challenged in order to remain valid, and exploits new potentials to take a proactive approach to shaping the future.
the art of rivalry
Architects, designers and artists have enduring rivalries which can lead to extraordinary results. Archrival seeks to harness this creative potential by creating self-directed projects that combine diverse creative skills, bringing people together to offer varying perspectives and allowing new practices to evolve.
our objectives
Create momentum and catalyse change in the architecture and design profession; by creating work quickly, collaboratively and without clients, Archrival aims to strategically affect the operation of the architecture profession.
Create interdisciplinary project teams which unite creative professionals with community, technology and business industries.
Strategically affect architectural and design practice; by inspiring creative professionals to participate in an independent practice separate from everyday commercial practice, Archrival promotes artistic excellence and professional development.
Strategically affect public engagement with architecture & design; by activating new types of audience participation Archrival nurtures the creativity of both audience and artist.
Forge alliances; by promoting innovative thinking and design excellence in new project teams, Archrival aims to transfer collaborative skills and interdisciplinary alliances back to everyday practice.
