2018 GRANDMOTHER TREE (SUNSET)
Grandmother Tree was commissioned by Barangaroo Delivery Authority for the 2018 Sunset 20˚ North Festival at Barangaroo. Designed in collaboration with award winning designer and Yuwaalaraay woman Lucy Simpson, Grandmother Tree is inspired by indigenous descriptions of the Angophora tree. Yuin elder Uncle Max Dulamunmun Harrison describes Angophoras; “Once you start looking at those old Grannies, as we call them, then you know ‘Whoah, there’s a woman’s place somewhere round about here’, because they are used as a signpost. When you look at these old Grannies, they are nurturing and they are holding things, you have got all those kind of limbs twisting and turning, you see what Grannies and Mothers do. That’s how you identify them like that.” Set amongst a tree grove on the northern slope of Barangaroo Reserve, the Grandmother Tree is a dramatic filter for festival visitors and an invitation visitors to explore this iconic harbour-front setting in a new light.
